Printable Sudoku: Free Puzzles to Print at Home

Pick a level, press Print Sudoku, and you get a PDF with one puzzle on an A4 page. The levels differ in two things: how many digits the grid starts with, and what kind of logic you need to finish it. The second matters more. Our medium and hard puzzles start with the same number of clues, and they are nothing alike to solve.

Which level to print

• Easy: 30 givens. Nearly every easy grid can be finished with singles alone, so you can solve it in pen without pencil marks.
• Medium: 21 to 23 givens. About two in three still need only singles, but they are harder to spot. The rest need a pointing pair or a claiming group, which means a few pencil marks.
• Hard: also 21 to 23 givens. No hard puzzle we checked falls to singles. Expect pairs, often a wing, and a full grid of pencil marks.

What the printout looks like

The grid sits in the top half of the page, about 8.6 cm (3.4 in) across, so each cell is a little under 1 cm. Beside it you get the level, the number of givens, and a QR code that opens the same puzzle online. Three boxes on the print screen add more:

• Progress prints the digits you have already placed in the online game.
• Notes prints your pencil marks, if you made any online.
• Solutions adds a second page with the finished grid.

The PDF is A4. On US Letter, choose "fit to page" in the print dialog and the grid shrinks very slightly.

Why print at all

Paper lets you write candidates the way you like, cross things out, and leave a puzzle half done on the table for tomorrow. It also works where a screen does not: a classroom, a flight, a waiting room. If you print one puzzle for several people, everyone has the same grid, which makes comparing answers easy.
